About Alumni Organizations

Lifetime Brotherhood in Phi Kappa Theta

Initiation into Phi Kappa Theta is for life, and therefore, after graduation a brother continues to enjoy the benefits of membership. Alumni brothers are usually very appreciative of what the fraternity gave them while undergraduate members, and are willing to help within the limits of time available to them when asked. It has been found that the alumni brothers are very valuable if active chapters seek their help through the formation of alumni chapters and alumni corporate boards. Active chapters should think primarily in terms of how the alumni can assist in terms of advice, business expertise, and their fraternity experience.

There are five basic ways in which you may be involved as an alumnus:

  1. The alumni chapter is an official voting group of alumni. This can be composed of the alumni of all chapters in a particular geographic area.

  2. The alumni association is an organization set up along chapter lines regardless of geographic area. Alumni associations exist formally or informally for many chapters and should include all the alumni in good standing of a chapter wherever they may live, even though the periodic or annual meetings may be held in the college town or another city with a large concentration of that chapter's alumni.

  3. An alumni corporate board is the incorporated householding corporation and/or fiscal control board of the chapter. Although it may be independent of the general alumni association of the chapter, in the case of Georgia Gamma Tau, it is one and the same.

  4. A chapter alumnus advisor is a position in which you may want to find yourself some day. This advisor usually lives close to the chapter and is involved in its daily affairs. He advises the undergraduate brothers and chapter officers on administrative activities, financial matters, and also housing concerns. The alumnus advisor usually works as a liaison to the alumni association and ensures that the lines of communication are open between the association and the chapter. At Georgia Gamma Tau, the members of the alumni e-board jointly perform this function under the coordination of the alumni president.

There are many undergraduates who get some assistance from an alumnus after they graduate. As an alumnus, you may help in a number of ways, for example, with career assistance. You may advise undergraduates who are interested in the field in which you are employed. Perhaps you would work with the undergraduates, alumni association, and alumnus advisor to set up seminars that deal with interviewing, resume writing, and the job search. Some alumni seek out undergraduates for intern positions and eventually hire that brother. Remember to always lend a helping and caring hand to your brothers!

  5. Financial support is another way in which you can greatly impact your undergraduate brothers. Your financial assistance is very necessary to the continued success of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity.

These are only a few of the ways in which you may be involved as an alumnus. More information about alumni activities, such as serving as a Province Volunteer, may be found at National's Web Site. Remember that your duty to brotherhood lasts a lifetime.
